MMDA, San Juan LGU, DTI Inspect Agora Public Market
The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, together with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and San Juan City Government, today inspected the Agora Public Market to monitor compliance with the suggested retail prices (SRP) of basic necessities and prime commodities.
The inspection was led by MMDA Acting Chairman Atty. Don Artes, MMDA General Manager Undersecretary Procopio Lipana, San Juan City Mayor Francis Zamora and DTI Assistant Secretary for Consumer Protection Group Ann Claire Cabochan.
Aside from price monitoring, they also checked the weighing scales of vendors.
Artes said that Metro Manila mayors will help in ensuring compliance with the SRP to protect consumers from unscrupulous sellers.
"We will coordinate with the Metro Manila Council to conduct monitoring of prices in various wet markets in the metropolis," Artes said during today's market visit.
For his part, Mayor Zamora said he initiated the market inspection to assure consumers of protection from price irregularities.
"I want to make sure that our constituents are not being sold overpriced commodities," Zamora explained, adding that the San Juan City Government has a Local Price Coordinating Council (LPCC) tasked to monitor the supply and prices of basic food items.
Based on the latest price monitoring, the SRP of imported red onions is ₱125 per kilogram, which covers medium and large-sized onions.
Two notices of violation were issued against retailers at Agora Public Market due to failure to comply with the SRP.
Agora is the only public market operating in San Juan.
