MMDA Deploys Contingent Team to Abra Following Magnitude 7 Quake

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) today will deploy a 39-man contingent team in Abra following a powerful 7.0-magnitude quake that struck the province Wednesday morning.

MMDA Officer-in-Charge Baltazar Melgar said the contingent, composed of personnel from the agency’s Road Emergency Group (REG), Metro Parkways Clearing Group (MPCG), and Public Safety Division, would assist in road clearing in affected areas.

"The first team consisting of 11 personnel leaves today, while the second team composed of 28 personnel will be leaving tomorrow morning to take part in clearing operations," said Melgar, adding that this initiative is in response to the request of Abra Gov. Dominic Valera.

“We will exert our efforts by mobilizing our personnel and other resources to provide immediate assistance to the quake’s victims,” he further said.

The MMDA will also dispatch two rapid response vehicles, one ambulance, two generator sets, 15 modular tents, 10 portable water purifiers, and two portable jack hammers.

The MMDA contingent will stay in Abra for an unspecified number of days, as needed.

The earthquake's epicenter was located near the municipality of Tayum in Abra, according to Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology. It had a depth of 17 kilometers.
