MMDA to Provide Legal Assistance to Assaulted Traffic Personnel in Pasig

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority will provide legal assistance to one of its traffic enforcers who was hurt after being punched by a motorist he apprehended for a traffic violation on April 1 in Pasig City.

The enforcer, identified as Muslimin Hapi, said that he flagged down the suspect named Jeric Baylen at around 7pm last Friday along Meralco Avenue, Kapitolyo, Pasig.

In his sworn statement to the Pasig City Police Station, Hapi said that he issued an ordinance violation receipt (OVR) for reckless driving to Baylen but an altercation ensued when he was about to go back to his post.

The victim said that Baylen punched him in the face resulting to injuries. The enforcer then brought the suspect to the police station where he was charged with direct assault.

MMDA Chairman Romando Artes said that the agency is providing Hapi all the legal assistance, emphasizing that the MMDA is one with their field personnel who are just doing their duties. He also appealed to the motorists to exercise control and composure especially when apprehended.

"The MMDA doesn't condone road rage regardless if it is from our ranks or the motoring public. We want to remind the motorists, especially those who were apprehended, that they have the right to file a protest to contest their violation through our Traffic Adjudication Board. All the complaints will be accorded due process," Artes said.

The suspect is currently detained at the Pasig City Police Substation 1.
