MMDA Reopens Gen. Tinio U-Turn Slot
The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority today reopened the General Tinio u-turn slot along EDSA in Caloocan City after the agency received complaints on heavy traffic in the area.
"To alleviate the heavy traffic flow, we will reopen the u-Turn slot in Gen. Tinio pending the proposed elevated bus ramps," MMDA Chairman Benhur Abalos said after his ocular inspection in the area with Caloocan City Mayor Oscar Malapitan.
Concrete barriers were removed and traffic enforcers were deployed to guide the motorists and ensure smooth flow of vehicular traffic.
"We are grateful for the immediate action of the MMDA to resolve the traffic in the area," Malapitan said. The mayor wrote a letter to the MMDA to raise concerns on the traffic caused by the closure.
The mayor also said that the city will help the agency by augmenting the manpower and will deploy its own traffic personnel from 6am to 10pm.
Abalos stressed that the u-turn slot will remain open until the construction of elevated bus ramps which he said is the solution to the traffic along the Metro Manila’s main artery.
“We are already coordinating with the Department of Transportation and the Department of Public Works and Highways for the design and eventual building of the elevated bus ramps,” he added.
Under the planned elevated bus ramps, vehicles can use the u-turn slots below the elevated ramps which will be exclusively used by public utility buses.
Around 28,000 motorists are using the Gen. Tinio and the adjacent A. De Jesus u-turn slots daily.
The Gen. Tinio u-turn was closed last February 1.
