Government Agencies Intensify Anti-colorum Drive
In a bid to rid major thoroughfares of illegally plying vehicles, combined traffic operatives of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), Philippine National Police – Highway Patrol Group (PNP-HPG), Land Transportation Office (LTO), and Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) jointly conducted anti-colorum operations at strategic areas in the metropolis this morning.
Six composite teams were deployed to apprehend colorum vans and out-of-line public utility jeepneys (PUJs) which add up to the traffic problems in Metro Manila. The six areas were as follows: Centris, Trinoma, Panay Avenue, Araneta Center, Monumento, and Coastal Road.
MMDA Traffic Discipline Office head lawyer Crisanto Saruca said as of 9:30 a.m., five out-of-line PUJs and six vans were netted and subsequently impounded at the LTFRB impounding area in Taytay, Rizal. The violators will pay the corresponding fine per the Joint Administrative Order of LTO and LTFRB.
An MMDA Traffic Aide was among those flagged down in Monumento and apprehended for driving a colorum van. “We will not tolerate this kind of activity among our ranks. Law enforcers should never be lawbreakers,” Saruca said.
“The MMDA, together with LTO, LTFRB, and PNP-HPG will continue this drive against colorum and out-of-line vehicles to put a stop to the traffic problems caused by them, particularly along EDSA, and to protect the safety of passengers” Saruca said.
According to Saruca, the areas of operation were divulged to the members of the composite teams only minutes before the actual deployment. “We want to make this as covert as possible, so that the operators of these illegal vehicles will be caught off guard.”
