Kudos to MMDA

DEAR Mr. Villanueva:

I am very pleased the way the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is handling the dismantling of giant billboards that were indiscriminately constructed and proliferated along EDSA, Commonwealth Avenue and C-5, among other major roads and thoroughfares of Metropolitan Manila.

As an environmental planner and a motorist who is daily driving along EDSA, the metropolis' 22-kilometer main thoroughfare connecting the highly urbanized cities of Pasay, Manila, Makati, Mandaluyong, San Juan, Quezon City, and Caloocan, I am exhilarated that MMDA is preventing the occurrence of topping of billboards especially during inclement weather to promote safety to passengers and motorists, and advance a clutter free Metro Manila, and at the same time ease the heavy nationwide infrastructure responsibilities of the Department of Public Works and Highways.

Under the able leadership of Chairman Francis N. Tolentino, MMDA is gradually altering the bad images of the metropolis as poverty-stricken, overly populated, polluted, and filthy, crime hot spots, poor delivery of basic urban services, and lacking planning foresight. It is now improving the metropolitan environs for the better.

The agency's campaign against illegal and non-compliant outdoor advertising billboards and other advertising signs, among other programs and projects of MMDA, deserves the multi partisan support of everybody in government and the unqualified endorsement of all sectors of the society for it to be able to sustain its manpower and logistics requirements.

Thank you and more power.

RAUL D. VERCELES
